‘Story of our season’ – Harry Kane reacts to Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Liverpool

Harry Kane described Tottenham’s slow start out of the blocks against Liverpool as being the story of their season after they fell to a 2-1 defeat in north London this evening.

Tottenham once again continued their trend of starting slowly and it proved to be costly after they were unable to catch the Merseysiders after gifting them a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Mistakes have been creeping into Eric Dier’s game in recent weeks and the World Cup hopeful miscued his header back to Hugo Lloris which allowed Mo Salah on goal and he chipped the ball over the Frenchman.

Spurs can feel aggrieved that they were not awarded a penalty in the first half when both the referee and VAR waved away a penalty appeal after Ryan Sessegnon was clearly bundled over by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It was a considerable better effort in the second half, however, despite Kane clawing once back, it proved to be too much of an ask to salvage a point.

Kane told Sky Sports Main Event (06/11/22 – 18:50):

“It has been the story of our season so far – we haven’t played well enough in the first half and got punished.

“We fought until the end and we knew if we got one back we would have chances to get a second but unfortunately we couldn’t do it and it’s disappointing.

“We need to be better at controlling games and we have to look back at this game but I don’t think it was terrible, we just got punished with two clinical goals.

“In the second half we were the better team so we will not panic but we need to be better for sure.”

Tottenham cannot continue to be as passive in the first half and leave it all to do in the second half. Conte clearly needs reinforcements during the January transfer window to add some extra quality to the ranks with a lack of depth when the likes of Richarlison, Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski and Cristian Romero are not in the starting eleven.
