Striker deal called off due to wage demands

Robbie Keane

Birmingham have confirmed they are no longer interested in signing Robbie Keane.

Blues agreed a fee with Spurs for the Republic of Ireland international last week but the move has now apparently stalled over the player’s wage demands.

Birmingham’s acting chairman Peter Pannu told the club’s website bcfc.com: “I met with (manager) Alex (McLeish) and (chief scout) Paul (Montgomery) today to discuss some new targets – names that we will not be mentioning at this moment in time – as we have decided that the signing of Keane would not be in the best financial interests of the club.

“Everyone knows he is a tremendous player but having considered the overall package (one which certainly wasn’t unfair on the part of his representatives to ask for given his talent and experience), Keane’s age and the length of contract we felt that financially he wasn’t the best option available.

“This is unfortunate because Keane is a class act but supporters can rest assured we are considering other options and will pursue them where financially viable.”

  1. Really need to get him off the books both spurs and Keane need to move on I cant believe he priced himself out of playing regular football.

  2. So much for playing football for the love of the game. If that was the case he’d have jumped at the chance. I’m sure they weren’t offering him the pittance the rest of us earn. I was waiting for him to sign for them and declare he’d been a fan of Birmingham since he was a boy.

  3. What a greedy little fcuker he is, he would rather sit in the stands and pick up his lolly when he clearly knows he isn’t part of Harrys future plans.

Keano youve let yourself down there, you could have started every game for the next 4 seasons but greed has got the better of you!

  4. Where did Birmingham say his wages were a stumbling block?? They didn’t, they said his demands were perfectly fair. Just that they felt they’d rather spend the money elsewhere. Get the story straight!

  5. Just a quick note to Aberdeen Andy. If the press are to be believed the move to West Ham broke down because Keane asked for a £1 million bonus if West Ham avoided relegation. So he probably is a greedy little ……
