‘Such a high ceiling’ – Postecoglou is in awe of one Tottenham 21-year-old

Ange Postecoglou has showered praise on Pape Matar Sarr after his display against Aston Villa, admitting that the sky is the limit for the young midfielder.

After being benched for Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace two weeks ago, Sarr came back into the starting eleven for Spurs’ trip to Villa Park, which was undoubtedly the club’s biggest game of the campaign so far.

Postecoglou had remarked last week that the 21-year-old was not 100 per cent and was nursing a back problem (Football.London) but there was certainly no sign of that on Sunday as he delivered a typically industrious display, hardly giving the Villa midfielders any time to breathe.

While the home side managed to keep Tottenham at bay during the first half, the Lilywhites ran riot in the second period, with Sarr being the architect of the first goal.

The Senegal international beat the offside trap to make a run down the right and picked out James Maddison with a brilliant cross, with the attacking midfielder turning the ball home from close range.

That sent Tottenham on their way to a morale-boosting 4-0 win, with Sarr playing 70 minutes before making way for Rodrigo Bentancur.

Ange Postecoglou is excited by Pape Matar Sarr

When asked about the former Metz star’s performance, Postecoglou told Spurs Play: “Yeah, he was brilliant. His energy and his quality, it was a great ball into Maddison for our goal and it was an important goal. He always gives everything.

“I thought he was unlucky with the yellow card, to be honest. He’s handled himself well. For a young man, he’s very mature and that’s the beauty of guys like that and we’ve got a few of them in our team, is that they’ve got such a high ceiling in terms of the kind of footballers they can be.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One of the main reasons that Tottenham fans should be optimistic about the next couple of years is that many of our young players are nowhere near their ceiling at the moment.

The likes of Sarr, Van de Ven, Udogie and arguably even Johnson are all on their way to becoming world-class players if they are not there already.
