‘Such a mess’ – Chris Sutton predicts Tottenham vs Manchester United score

Chris Sutton has been discussing the midweek Premier League fixtures and the pundit told the BBC that he cannot back Tottenham Hotspur to beat Manchester United.

Tottenham find themselves in dire straits at the moment, coming off the back of a 6-1 drubbing against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

The result saw interim manager Cristian Stellini lose his job, and left Tottenham with very little hope of finishing in the top four now.

The Lilywhites host Manchester United on Thursday evening, with Ryan Mason in charge for the first time as Acting Head Coach since Stellini’s dismissal.

Manchester United meanwhile are currently in fourth place and go into the game off the back of securing their place in the FA Cup final after a tense penalty shootout win over Brighton at the weekend.

The Red Devils can go a long way to securing their own slot in the top four with a win over Spurs this week.

Sutton admits he can’t see anything but a Manchester United win, as he is not convinced Spurs can bounce back.

He said: “I really fancy Manchester United here. Tottenham just capitulated against Newcastle and they are in such a mess that they have just fired their interim manager, Cristian Stellini.

“If Newcastle had continued scoring at the same rate they did in the first 21 minutes, then they would have ended up winning 22-0.

“Will Spurs bounce back, after one of the most gutless displays I have ever seen? I am not convinced.”

On Man United, Sutton added: “United were fortunate to get through their FA Cup semi-final with Brighton.

“I enjoyed the game and how it panned out, and Erik ten Hag’s side were quite effective on the break.

“I don’t see them scoring as many as Newcastle did, but I definitely don’t think Tottenham will keep a clean sheet.

“I am sure Spurs won’t be as bad as they were on Sunday, but I just can’t back them at the moment.”

Sutton’s prediction: 1-3

Put me down for a United win, too. Sometimes, a team will use a crushing defeat like what we experienced on Sunday and turn it into a passionate display and redeem themselves.

I can’t see this bunch of players doing that, and I fear the mentality of the team will be irretrievably impacted for a while.
