Summer signing admits he ‘had a chat’ with former Spurs midfielder before joining

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has admitted that the conversation he had with his international teammate and former Spurs midfielder, Christian Eriksen, helped convince him that a move to Tottenham would be the right next step for him.

The midfielder became Tottenham’s first signing of the summer and helped to fill a hole in defensive midfield left by the recent exits of Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele.

The Denmark international has featured in all three of Tottenham’s pre-season friendlies so far and has displayed the kind of attributes the Lilywhites have been missing in the middle of the park, albeit against lower league opposition.

Hojbjerg is one of several Tottenham stars who are currently away on international duty as he joined up with the Denmark squad earlier this week ahead of their European qualifiers against Belgium and England.

The 25-year-old admitted that he wanted to clarify some things about the club with Eriksen, who left Spurs to join Inter Milan last January.

In an interview with Ekstra Bladet (as relayed by Football.London), Hojbjerg said: “I called Christian and had a chat. I had some questions that I would have had clarified. And that was really positive. The talk I had with Christian, strengthened my desire and feeling to move to Tottenham.”

It sounds like Eriksen had good things to say about Spurs, which suggests that he does look back on his time in North London fondly despite how things soured towards the end. From the first three episodes of the Amazon documentary, it felt very much like Eriksen just wanted a change of scenery and there was nothing more to his transfer to Inter than that. It will be interesting to see in the next few episodes how his move actually played out. Hopefully, like Eriksen, Hojbjerg also goes on to be a great servant for Tottenham over many years.
