Italian journalist Lapo De Carlo believes that Guglielmo Vicario should be Italy’s number one ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma, given the way the Tottenham man has excelled since his move to the Premier League last summer.
Spurs fans are certainly well aware of the kind of quality that Vicario possesses, with the 27-year-old not only proving an excellent shot-stopper but also showcasing his quality with the ball at his feet, which has enabled Ange Postecoglou’s men to play out from the back comfortably.
The Italian has saved the Lilywhites on several occasions this season and he has also quickly become one of the leaders of the dressing room.
Vicario was handed his first cap for Italy on Sunday as the Azzuri overcame Ecuador 2-0 in an international friendly in the United States.
The Tottenham man’s performance received mixed reviews, with some outlets not totally convinced by him (The Cult of Calcio) while others were a bit more complimentary (Sky Italia).
It remains to be seen if Vicario can force his way into Italy’s starting eleven permanently, with Donnarumma having been a reliable performer for his country for a number of years.

However, De Carlo believes the Spurs star is a much better goalkeeper than the Paris Saint-Germain number one.
The journalist told TV Play (as relayed by Tutto Cagliari): “I am very enthusiastic about Vicario, who, in my opinion, is superior to Donnarumma and I hope he will be the goalkeeper of the national team.
“He had some incredible games with Tottenham, saving them several times, and I’m rooting for him because he’s a good guy and I think he trains very seriously.”

While one can certainly argue that Vicario is an overall better goalkeeper than Donnarumma, I cannot see Luciano Spalletti rocking the boat by making the Tottenham man his number one ahead of the Euros.
The PSG star is influential in the dressing room, having been a brilliant performer for the Azzuri for several years and he will keep the gloves as long as he does not have a major dip.
