Surprising stats shows much-criticised Spurs star is best in the league

Sky Sports have revealed that Hugo Lloris ranks number one in the Premier League by some distance when it comes to over-performing his ‘Expected Saves’ – the likelihood of a goalkeeper saving the various shots he has faced.

Lloris has come under plenty of criticism from some pundits on the back of a few errors he has made this season.

However, Jose Mourinho has continued to defend the Frenchman, insisting that he believes the 34-year-old is the best goalkeeper in the league.

According to Sky Sports, the stats back up the Tottenham boss’ claim regarding Lloris.

By assessing shots by location and type before checking where in the goalmouth those shots were struck, they have calculated the likelihood of any shot being saved based on historical data.

It is revealed that the Spurs captain has been worth 18 to 19 goals from the start of the 2018/19 season, which is by far the highest across the division.

In fact, Liverpool’s Alisson, who has the second-best numbers, has only been worth just over 6 goals in comparison.

Lloris’ tendency to make an occasional mistake sometimes masks the truth about the number of points he has saved us over the years. He has been a fantastic servant for us and these stats prove that he certainly has a few more years left in him at the top level. I am hopeful that Spurs can agree on a contract extension with the 34-year-old this summer.
