Some Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to social media to react to the news that Jan Vertonghen has completed a move to Benfica.
The Belgian international was unveiled to the media at a special event in Portugal yesterday evening after he signed a three-year contract (Daily Mail).
The 33-year-old left Tottenham last month following the expiration of his contract which ended his eight-year association with the club after joining from Ajax in 2012.
Sky Sports claimed that Tottenham decided against extending the defender’s contract. His deal was due to expire in June but penned a short-term contract extension to allow him to complete the 2019/20 Premier League season, but rarely featured following the restart as Spurs finished sixth in the table.
The central defender made over 300 appearances for Tottenham and will now take up a fresh challenge in Portugal.
