Team News: Nuno comments on South American stars and Bergwijn return

Nuno Espirito Santo has provided a team news update to journalists who have virtually attended Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-Newcastle United press conference from Hotspur Way this afternoon.

Such is the protocol, the media are informed of the availability of the Spurs squad ahead of Nuno answering questions prior to the trip to St James’ Park on Sunday.

Pre-match press conferences for Premier League fixtures are continuing to take place on the Zoom video conferencing platform with journalists still not able to attend Hotspur Way in person in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Spurs head north to face the Magpies with the Toon Army having been re-energised following Mike Ashley’s departure and the takeover by the Saudi-backed consortium.

The North Londoners head into the fixture having beaten Aston Villa prior to the international break having ended a horrible run of three defeats in top-flight matches in which they were comprehensively beaten by Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Nuno has confirmed that all four South American stars, Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero, Emerson Royal and Davinson Sanchez, will travel back to Tottenham today and join the squad tomorrow.

The Spurs head coach also revealed that Steven Bergwijn had returned to training, while hinting at some other unnamed injury problems.

On the South American players, he said (Football London): “They are travelling now. They will join us tomorrow and then we’ll see.”

On Bergwijn, he added: “He joined us yesterday. He is totally integrated in the group. He did well. No pain and now about getting back to his highest levels of fitness.”

Asked if Bergwijn could be available for Newcastle, Nuno said: “We don’t know. First of all, everybody together. Then we’ll see.”

Finally, on potential other injuries, he commented: “After the international break there are always problems. We have problems but I won’t say them before the game.”
