Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool will fight it out for the Champions League trophy on Saturday at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Both teams come into the game high on confidence after producing terrific comebacks in the second legs of their respective semi-final clashes against Barcelona and Ajax.

Ahead of the game, former Liverpool manager and player Graeme Souness has insisted that Tottenham are fortunate to be in the final. In an interview to Balls.IE, the 66-year-old also said that only Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen from Spurs would be capable of getting into Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Reacting to Souness’ comments, some Spurs fans on social media suggested that the former Spurs academy product had just made Mauricoo Pochettino’s job easier by giving him inspiration for his pre-match team talk.

Check out how some Spurs fans reacted to the comments:

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the character and determination that Tottenham have shown over the course of the current Champions League campaign, no one can say that Spurs don’t deserve to be in the final.

Let’s hope the Liverpool players are as confident as Souness heading into the game, in which case they could be in for a rude awakening.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. I’ve always quite liked Souness, as he has always expressed an affinity for Spurs in his punditry (having started his career with us). And now, as a great ex-Liverpool player, of course he’s going to be biased in favour of them, but he’s just come out with total bollox and disrespect regarding his former club, Spurs. He should recognise that Spurs have done all this against the odds, and against all the obstacles set up against them (the countless injuries at critical times, the lack of a ‘home’ for the best part of two years, the lack of expenditure on players for 18 months, and so on). Sure, we’ve ridden our good luck at times, despite all the bad luck re injuries, but there were also many moments when we didn’t get the breaks in games, particularly early on in the Group stage. We’re in the CL Final because we got the better of possibly the best team in the world over TWO games (not just a one-off game), a team that has expensive cover even for their ‘cover’, whereas we struggled to get a team together. But then that’s the point, because (especially against Ajax) our team, although they couldn’t fully adapt to the way we usually play, at least showed drive and determination and a sheer will to win. And patience and a strong mentality. It’s what cut us short last season against Juve in the last 16 of the CL, and Man U in the SFs of the FA Cup. Now, we have it! So Souness should recognise all that and applaud us for it, not denigrate our achievements. We DO deserve to be in the CL Final, and I pray to God that we complete the job against HIS team on Saturday!

  2. I was a junior at Spurs with Souness in the sixties . He thought he should have advanced faster and moaned his way out of the club . He has held a grudge for fifty years . All this is sour grapes from an angry man .
