Technical director dishes major blow to potential Spurs pursuit of midfielder

AC Milan technical director, Paulo Maldini has insisted that rumoured Tottenham target Franck Kessie will not leave the San Siro this summer.

Kessie has established himself as one of the best box-to-box midfielders in Italian football over the past few years.

The midfielder’s agent admitted last month that Tottenham were one of the clubs that held an interest in his client (TMW).

Spurs’ North London rivals, Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder (Gazzetta dello Sport).

Eurosport reported two weeks ago that the 24-year-old, who is into the final 12 months of his current deal, was in a contract standoff with Milan.

It was claimed that Tottenham were at the front of the queue for the Ivory Coast international’s signature and were primed to swoop if the contract talks were not successful.

However, Maldini has now asserted that the Rossoneri are working to extend Kessie’s contract.

When asked about the speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future, the legendry centre-back told DAZN (via Fabrizio Romano): “Franck Kessie will stay as he’s part of our future, we’re working to extend his contract”.

The fact that Kessie’s agent publicly spoke about Tottenham’s interest suggests that he is using it as a bargaining chip to get his client a lucrative contract at Milan. Even if Kessie does not agree on a new deal, we are unlikely to have a free run at him as one would imagine that several clubs would show interest in the midfielder.
