Teddy Sheringham issues warning to Spurs and Man Utd after Newcastle takeover

Teddy Sheringham has warned his former clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United that they could lose their place in the top-six following Newcastle United’s takeover.

There is a lot of excitement in the North East after a Saudi-led consortium took over Newcastle from Mike Ashley for a reported £305m a couple of weeks ago.

The new owners have promised the club’s fans they will invest considerably into the squad to get the Magpies competing near the top end of the league.

They have already made their first major decision of their tenure by firing Steve Bruce, with the likes of Paulo Fonseca and Erik Ten Hag being linked with the job.

Spurs were Newcastle’s first opponents following their takeover and the Lilywhites dampened the party atmosphere at St James’ Park last week, coming away with a deserved 3-2 win.

However, Sheringham believes that Tottenham run the risk of being overtaken by Newcastle in the long term.

The Spurs legend told 888Sport: “Tottenham are at risk of losing their top-six spot and so are Manchester United at the moment.

“That’s how big the problems are at both teams. It’s not great for either club at the moment and they both need to turn things around.”

It will take Newcastle at least 3 to 4 years to challenge for the top six even if they get their recruitment and managerial appointments spot-on. So, this is not something the likes of Spurs need to worry about for now.

Additionally, as we have seen with the likes of Everton, simply splashing the cash in the transfer window does not guarantee much, particularly if the club is not in a position to attract the best players.
