Teddy Sheringham urges Spurs to avoid signing 25-year-old alleged striker target

Teddy Sheringham has insisted that Richarlison is not the type of player that Tottenham need to be adding to their squad this summer.

Reports first emerged last weekend suggesting that Spurs are interested in a move for Richarlison at the right price (The Athletic’s David Ornstein).

Brazilian publication UOL claimed a few days ago that Tottenham are ready to make a big offer for the striker, who is said to be keen to leave Goodison Park this summer.

The report added that the 25-year-old prefers a move to either Spurs or Chelsea, having already turned down Arsenal’s advances.

However, it remains to be seen whether a move for the Everton star would be feasible for Antonio Conte’s men, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that the Toffees want a whopping €70m- €75m (£60m-£64.2m) to let the player leave (CaughtOffside).

Sheringham questioned the logic of Tottenham pursuing Ricahrlison, given the attacking talent the Lilywhites have at their disposal. The Spurs legend also insisted that the Brazilian international is not of the required quality to excite the players within the squad.

He told Lord Ping (as relayed by The Daily Express): “I don’t think he’s what is needed now.

“Tottenham have got good attacking players; [Harry] Kane, [Heung-min] Son, [Dejan] Kulusevski, [Steven] Bergwijn is still there, [Lucas] Moura is still there.

“We’ve got players in the Richarlison mould and I don’t think he would be a statement signing that would get teams worried.

“If they were to sign him, what would the result be? In my day, when we signed [Jurgen] Klinsmann, a proper World Class player, everyone in the dressing room was buzzing.

“We knew what we were going to get from him. You need players that are going to take you to the next level and I don’t think Richarlison is one of them.”

Given that Bergwijn is expected to leave the club and Conte does not seem to rate Bryan Gil, we certainly need to sign one more forward/winger this summer. With five substitutions being allowed next season, having the option to bring on two top-class forwards from the bench could prove invaluable.
