‘Thank God I’m fine’ – Emerson Royal issues update after escaping armed robbery attempt

Tottenham defender Emerson Royal has issued a message of gratitude after escaping an attempt of armed robbery in his native Brazil unharmed.

Brazilian outlet Jovem Pan Esportes reported the 23-year-old was involved in an incident in the early hours of Friday morning at a nightclub in Sao Paulo in which gun shots were fired.

O Liberal note he was taking pictures with an off-duty police officer when leaving the nightclub at around 3am before an individual approached and demanded his belongings, including a watch and chain.

The officer reportedly noticed the thief and drew his gun in response and fired more than 20 shots as Emerson fled the scene, while the assailant had to then be transported to a local hospital after being shot in the back.

The former Barcelona man has now provided an update on his situation, thanking the public’s messages of support while adding he will explain more about the incident in due course on Instagram stories.

Emerson joined Tottenham in last summer in a deal worth more than £25 million and signed a five-year contract in the process (BBC Sport).

He made 31 appearances in his first campaign in the Premier League (Transfermarkt) as Spurs secured their return to next season’s Champions League group stage.
