‘That could pay off’ – Lineker and Shearer predict how Solanke will do at Tottenham

Both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have approved Tottenham’s signing of Dominic Solanke, suggesting that the centre-forward will do well for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Spurs break the bank for Dominic Solanke

Solanke showed last season that he is a handful when playing in a high-pressing system, with the striker taking his game to a new level following the arrival of Andoni Iraola.

The 26-year-old ended the 2023-24 campaign with 21 goals across all competitions, which is an outstanding tally when one considers the fact that the Cherries finished in 12th place.

That is perhaps why Tottenham decided to break their transfer record and agree a £65m deal for the centre-forward, with the price tag raising a few eyebrows.

Some pundits have opined that Spurs should have gone for Ivan Toney instead as the Brentford striker offers more than the former Cherries star (talkSPORT).

Shearer and Lineker expect big things from Solanke

However, that is not an opinion shared by Lineker and Shearer, who both felt that it was a smart signing by Tottenham.

Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “Solanke to Spurs. It’s an interesting signing for Spurs, he had a brilliant season last year. That could pay off.”

The Newcastle legend responded: “He had a brilliant season and that was definitely an area where Spurs have had to strengthen. I think he will do well for them there.”

I genuinely think that Solanke was the best option among all the strikers available on the market, with the exception of the likes of Victor Osimhen, who were always going to be out of our price range.

If we can bring another top-class winger through the door, I would be pretty confident going into the season.
