‘That is personal’ – Darren Bent thinks Tottenham star has been treated unfairly

Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein refused to buy Neal Maupay’s defence that his mocking of James Maddison was just banter, insisting that the former Brentford star made it personal by laughing at the Tottenham man when he was cut from the England squad.

Neal Maupay’s antics have gone too far

Most fans would have been forgiven for thinking that the beef between Maddison and Maupay was over months ago and that the pair would have moved on from it.

However, the former Bees forward has made it a point to constantly reignite it, aiming several barbs at the Spurs man recently.

In his latest social media post, the Frenchman seemingly mocked Maddison after his exclusion from England’s Euros squad, posting a picture of him in front of a dart board after Gareth Southgate’s announcement.

This did not go down well with many Tottenham supporters on social media but Maupay defended his antics by telling talkSPORT a couple of days ago that he harbours no personal animosity towards Maddison and that the post was light-hearted.

Bent and Goldstein leap to James Maddison’s defence

However, Bent and Goldstein are not buying the Everton man’s defence, questioning why he would mock a player during one of the lowest moments of his career.

Bent told talkSPORT (10/06/24 at 4:55 pm): “Listen, Maddison not making a major tournament and him laughing about it, that’s personal that.

Goldstein added: “Also, picking on someone, right? Going after James Maddison or anyone. That is personal. That’s exactly what it is. That’s terrible.”

Bent then stated: “For him not making a major tournament? And knowing how devastated he would be. I don’t see the funny side to that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Maupay has shown his lack of maturity and class by having a dig at Maddison after such a major heartbreak and the forward will undoubtedly be booed incessantly when he comes to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.

Hopefully, Maddison can come back with a full pre-season under his belt and rediscover the form which he showed in the early part of last season prior to his ankle injury.
