‘That’s how I feel’ – Son makes admission about playing as a number nine for Spurs

Son Heung-min does not have one preferred position and would even be willing to play as a full-back if Ange Postecoglou wants him to do so.

Son has played as a centre-forward in Tottenham’s last three Premier League matches and the move has certainly worked, with the South Korean finding the back of the net five times.

It is a position in which the 31-year-old has thrived in the past when Harry Kane was out injured, most notably in Spurs’ run to the Champions League final back in 2019.

Richarlison came off the bench to brilliant effect in the clash against Sheffield United two weeks ago, scoring a goal and setting up Dejan Kulusevski’s late winner as the Lilywhites produced a dramatic late comeback.

Should Son stay as Tottenham’s number nine?

It remains to be seen if Son will be shifted back to the left by Postecoglou over the upcoming weeks, and the Tottenham captain has insisted that he would have no issues playing anywhere that he is asked to.

When asked about his favourite position, he told NBC Sports following the 2-2 draw against Arsenal: “The gaffer has a plan. If he plays me as a fullback, then I will do that for him. That’s how I feel, you know.

“If the manager chooses something different, then I will do what he asks for. Sometimes I will play as a winger and sometimes I will play as a striker.

“Every role is good for me. I am very happy to be part of this team and be out on the pitch. The gaffer has the best plan, so I am just trying to stick to it.”

World-class players like Son generally tend to be a bit selfish (which is perhaps what helps them get to that level in the first place) and tend to demand that they play closer to goal.

However, the South Korean is a complete team man who puts the needs of the side first, which is why we are very lucky to have him.
