‘The ability is there’ – Pundit expects teenager to get minutes for Spurs this season

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Michel Brown believes that Jack Clarke has the quality to get minutes under his belt for the Spurs first-team in the upcoming season.

Last season was an extremely disappointing one for Clarke as he failed to make an impact during either of his loan spells at Leeds and QPR after completing a move to Spurs last summer.

Some Spurs fans have been left worried by the winger’s inability to get game time, even for Championship outfits.

However, the teenager has been involved in all three of Tottenham’s pre-season friendlies so far and has shown glimpses of the ability that convinced the Lilywhites to pay £10million for him last summer.

Reports have indicated that Jose Mourinho might be prepared to give Clarke a chance with the first-team next season rather than sending him out on another loan (Evening Standard).

Brown insisted that just because the 19-year-old failed to get game time in the Championship last season does not mean he cannot be a useful asset for the Lilywhites.

When asked if Clarke can make an impact at Spurs, Brown told Football Insider: “He’s got the potential, we know he’s got that.

“It was just the minutes he didn’t get to play.

“Let’s just wait and see what condition he’s come back in. It’s a slightly different game the Premier League than it is in the Championship.

“You wouldn’t be overly surprised if he did get more minutes or was involved in the first-team squad.

“The ability is there. He needs to mature and learn the game. It was probably a bit of a misshaped season after his move to Spurs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We have not seen enough of Clarke to make an educated assessment of whether he can get enough minutes at Spurs. However, there is no point of loaning him out to a club where he does not get any minutes under his belt. It would be preferable to instead give him minutes in the Europe League and the Carabao Cup.
