‘The dream is to stay’ – Conte on joining Spurs and new contract talks

Antonio Conte has refused to confirm whether he will be signing a new contract with Tottenham or not, with his current deal set to expire in June – although Spurs are able to trigger an extension to his contract whenever they wish to do so (Football.London).

The Spurs boss admitted that when you join a new club as a manager, the dream is always to stay for many years and build something, but that depends on the ambition.

This appeared to be a hint that Conte is open to staying put in North London but only if the club match his thirst for major trophies by backing him in the transfer window.

Football Insider reported in October that Spurs are thought to be considering a £20million-a-year plus contract offer for Conte to stay in N17.

Meanwhile, Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Conte will hold talks with Spurs over a potential new deal in the coming weeks while the World Cup is being played.

Asked about a potential new contract today, Conte said (Football London): “You know very well that my contract expires in June. Until that moment the club has to make the best evaluation.

“I think that everything you need to deserve and it will be important to see the rest of the season and if we are happy with the improvement we are doing. I think that every situation it’s important to deserve.

“From my side, it’s important to feel that I deserve a new contract, to sign a new contract with this club. I have to feel this. We will talk with the club and find the best solution.

“But you know, I think when you start a path with a club the dream is to stay here for many years and try to build something important. I think it’s very important the relationship you create with the players, the club and the environment around you.

“Don’t forget the ambition. If you’re used to winning, it’s important to match all these situations. If you’re lucky to match all these situations it’s easy for a coach but in modern football it’s different.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

This doesn’t feel like something that is going to get sorted over the next few weeks. I suspect Conte might want to wait until after the January window or perhaps the end of the season before he assesses whether he wants to stay at Tottenham.
