‘The guy’ – Pundit hints that Tottenham are still over-reliant on one player

Alejandro Moreno has said that despite the impressive start that James Maddison has made to his Tottenham career, Son Heung-min remains the Lilywhites’ most important player.

Son has impressed since being shifted to the central striker role by Ange Postecoglou, with the South Korean having found the back of the net six times so far this season (Transfermarkt).

The 31-year-old’s goals have so far made up for Harry Kane’s departure and Tottenham fans will be hoping that he continues in the same vein and ends up having a similar season to 2021-22, where he won the Golden Boot.

Some pundits over recent days have argued that Maddison is the player who makes the current Tottenham side tick, with Jermaine Jenas even stating recently that he fears how his former side would be able to cope if they lost the midfielder to an injury (TNT Sports via FootballFancast).

Can you really say Spurs are reliant on Son for goals?

However, Moreno has now argued that it is Son that Spurs would not be able to do without as he is their only proper goalscorer.

The pundit told ESPN FC: “I find Heung-min Son to be the difference-maker for the team,

“And while I agree James Maddison and the connection with Heung-min Son has become a really important part to what Spurs do, and Heung-min Son – in some ways – depends on James Maddison, and James Maddison has been really good for Spurs, Heung-min Son is still the difference guy.

“He’s still the guy that’s going to score the goals for you. And I go back to scoring goals because this game is about scoring goals. This is how you win matches.

“And if Heung-min Son is scoring goals for Spurs, they’re winning games. If he’s not scoring goals for Spurs, they’re going to have a difficult time doing so, because James Maddison is not going to score those goals.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that we would struggle to score goals without Son at the moment, particularly given that Richarlison is lacking in confidence.

However, I believe that if you offered Postecoglou the choice of starting just one of Son and Maddsion at the moment, the Australian would prefer to play the attacking midfielder, which demonstrates how important the 26-year-old has become to the side.
