‘The next step’ – Lucas Bergvall admits it was a 50/50 decision between Spurs and Barcelona

Lucas Bergvall has discussed the dilemma he faced in choosing between Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona on transfer deadline day, and has revealed why he picked the former for the ‘next step’ in his career.

Barcelona appeared to be in the driving seat last week, but Spurs entered the pursuit for Lucas Bergvall and ended up winning the race. The Lilywhites secured a transfer that is believed to be worth up to £16m for the 18-year-old, depending on certain clauses in the agreement (Expressen).

Apparently, a major deciding factor in the battle between Spurs and Barcelona was the fact that the former offered Bergvall a clearer and more direct path to the first team (Mundo Deportivo).

Bergvall has previously commented on the switch (via Fabrizio Romano), describing it as a ‘fantastic feeling’ and explaining how he has been made to feel welcome at the club already.

The 18-year-old has also told the club’s socials how excited he is to play under Ange Postecoglou, and how he feels this is the start of a new era.

Bergvall found it difficult to pick between Spurs and Barcelona

Now, his latest comments come via Fabrizio Romano once more, and it seems the decision to reject Barcelona and sign for Spurs was not an easy one to make for Bergvall.

He said: “They are both incredible clubs. It was a very difficult choice, it was 50-50… It felt like the next step for me was Tottenham. It was not very easy to say no to Barça — it took a very long time to decide.”

I really hope Bergvall gets the opportunities he was seemingly promised and can make a success of his time at Tottenham. He’s got the quality, for sure, and we need to make sure we help him develop in the right way.
