‘The obvious choice’ – Pundit believes Spurs will sell 30-year-old in January

Noel Whelan has said that he expects Tottenham to move on Matt Doherty in January to make space for a new right wing-back.

90min reported earlier this week that Spurs are prioritising signing a right wing-back and a forward when the transfer window opens in January.

The report sugested that the Lilywhites were considering a move to re-sign Kyle Walker-Peters and were also monitoring Norwich City’s Max Aarons.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy have claimed that Antonio Conte wants to raid his former club for Denzel Dumfries, with the 53-year-old rumoured to have identified the Dutch international as an ideal replacement for Emerson Royal (CMW).

Inter are said to value Dumfries at over £26m, with the player also said to be on the radars of Manchester United and Chelsea (Rudy Galtetti).

Whelan has said that he is not surprised to hear that Spurs want to strengthen at right wing-back but he believes that it will be Doherty rather than Emerson who will make way.

The pundit told Football Insider: “I think Doherty is the obvious choice to leave. He’s not quite put a good run together. He’s had quality games, but sporadically. The full-back positions have always been an issue for Conte.

“He’s never been happy with any of his options there. On the left, he’s got Perisic and Sessegnon who are starting to look like long-term solutions for Spurs.

“But the right-hand side is an issue. Doherty and Royal haven’t been good enough. And the fact they paid big money for Djed Spence but he isn’t playing – it’s a worry in itself.

“It doesn’t surprise me to see that they want to bring another one in, but something’s got to give. Someone has to go out permanently, and they’ll be working hard to get that done in January.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Spurs do sign a right wing-back in January, I believe the decision on who to sell between Doherty and Emerson, will depend on who attracts better offers. While I would rather see the Brazilian being sold, Conte does seem to value him more than the former Wolves man.
