‘The only thing’ – Victor Wanyama reveals his only regret from time at Spurs

Victor Wanyama has revealed that his only regret from his time at Tottenham was not being able to win silverware with the club.

The Kenyan midfielder spent three-and-a-half years at Spurs after joining in June 2016 and went on to make 97 appearances for the club.

He forged a strong partnership in midfield with Belgian star Mousa Dembele as part of a fiercely competitive Spurs team led by Mauricio Pochettino.

It was also the side that came so close yet so far which Wanyama experienced first-hand, after falling just short of a Premier League title and Champions League crown respectively.

Spurs ultimately never managed to secure silverware during the Pochettino era, and have since gone through Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and now Antonio Conte in a bid to end the club’s 13-year drought.

Now plying his trade at CF Montreal, Wanyama has revealed that his biggest regret at Spurs was not being able to capitalise on a well-built team by winning a trophy to symbolise it.

He told Football Scotland: “I loved my time there. We had a great team. The only thing is, I don’t understand how we didn’t win any trophies.

“We had a great team. Whenever I think about it, it p***es me off, and I don’t have the answers for why we didn’t win any trophies. I don’t understand.

He added: “I think the club is screaming for trophies but I don’t think that’s the reason there are a lot of changes, I don’t think so.

“I think it was going a bit out of order, the results and everything, that’s why they changed the manager. But other than that, I think we were close.

“It was just a little bit of investment and it could have been done. Now I think the club is in the right direction and hopefully, in the future, we can win something.”

The Spurs team during that time was more than capable of securing silverware, but like old times it stumbled at the final hurdle.

It was a great shame considering the team was so well balanced and playing as a complete unit, it just couldn’t get over the line at the crucial points.
