Werner had made a considerable impact after joining the club on loan from RB Leipzig in January, with the pacy wide-forward chipping in with key contributions in the final third.

However, the German international’s season ended prematurely when he picked up a hamstring injury in the North London Derby and there were question marks regarding whether Spurs would activate the option to buy him on a permanent basis.

What the Lilywhites have done instead is agree a deal with Leipzig to extend Werner’s loan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for another 12 months, with the deal being confirmed on Tuesday.

Tottenham will cover 100% of Timo Werner’s salary during loan

Various reports have indicated Spurs will have the option to buy the 28-year-old for around €15m (£12.7m) next summer and will have to cover his entire salary during the 2024-25 season (Florian Plettenberg).

According to Capology, Werner is currently on a base salary of £165,000 plus bonuses, which would make him the joint fourth-highest earner at Spurs, alongside Cristian Romero.

Sportac’s figures state that only club captain Heung-min Son, midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and vice-captain James Maddison earn a higher salary.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Werner’s salary is definitely on the higher end, the fact that Spurs have got him for a total duration of 18 months without paying any loan fee makes it a fantastic deal for the North London club.

The 28-year-old has demonstrated that he can be a very handy squad player, especially with the likes of Bryan Gil and even Manor Solomon potentially heading out of the door during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham have lacked depth in attacking areas over the course of last season and if Ange Postecoglou wants to compete on multiple fronts next season, he needs to have the quality of depth within the Spurs first-team squad to call upon when needed.
