‘The squad is unbalanced’ – Nuno gives insight on disparity of fitness

Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed the fitness of some of his players is unbalanced due to the varying amount of training sessions they have been able to complete.

The Portuguese coach has had to navigate through a few of issues related to his playing squad, despite his tenure at the club still in its infancy.

On his arrival at the club, Nuno had to deal with the absence of a number of star players following their involvement with their respective national sides at Euro 2020 and Copa America.

In recent weeks, he lost his South American contingent to isolation in Croatia, while also having to deal with injuries picked up during matches.

While a handful of the players continue to recover, Spurs’ form, despite standing very positive before the international break, has taken a hit as a result.

Nuno is now looking to bring an end to a mini-rut of two straight top flight defeats, with a second visit to his former side Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

The Spurs coach was quizzed on the fitness problems he has encountered so far, and he admitted that the side is unbalanced because of a big disparity in training sessions completed by some players in his squad.

He told Football.London: “We are working very hard for it but in terms of times and hours of work, the squad is unbalanced.

“It’s unbalanced. We have players with almost 70 sessions. We have players with 15, 20 sessions. We have players with total unbalance. What we look is individually. Now is the process of looking at the individual aspects of the player we can improve.”

Nuno has faced a bit of adversity since arriving at Spurs over the summer. As soon as he finds a squad that plays well, it becomes derailed through injuries, suspensions and quarantine issues. But as a manager he has to deal with those problems as best as he can, and hopefully he can get his ideal side in order as players step up their recoveries.
