‘The turning point’ – Rio Ferdinand on ‘great opportunity’ for Dele Alli under Conte

Rio Ferdinand has urged Dele Alli to relish the opportunity to be coached by Antonio Conte at Tottenham in what could be his last chance to rediscover his best form at the club.

Despite starting as a go-to option under previous manager Nuno Espirito Santo, Alli has quickly fallen down the pecking order at the club and has been used for just 17 minutes of action in the last handful of games.

He did not feature in either of Spurs’ first two games under new boss Conte despite the squad being given a shake-up, however, Ferdinand is not giving up hope on the midfielder, who was previously a regular in the England fold.

The former Manchester United defender claimed the Spurs man should look to grab the opportunity to improve under the Italian with both hands as it could be the last chance saloon for him in North London.

He also claimed that Conte will not allow those letting their standards slip anywhere near his starting XI.

Speaking on his FIVE podcast, Ferdinand said: “I’m sure Dele will be sitting there going, ‘I’ve got to get it right this time’.

“[Antonio] Conte, he doesn’t suffer fools, he doesn’t accept standards that are below what he sets. So I’m sure this is again a great opportunity.

“He’s now got a manager who’s going to have huge demands, be demanding of him constantly every day. And that might be the turning point for Dele.”

It does feel like Alli is at a crossroads at Spurs and progress appears to have slowed and stopped altogether in the last couple of years. But if there is one manager to alter his fortunes, then it has to be Conte.
