‘The way the gaffer talks’ – Maddison reveals what he has noticed in Spurs training

James Maddison has said that it is quite clear already from the training sessions he has been part of just what Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff expect of the team.

Despite the disappointing end to last season and the uncertainty over Harry Kane’s future, there is excitement surrounding the new campaign at Spurs, owing to the promise of what Postecoglou could bring.

Tottenham fans have endured some fairly negative football over recent years but the Australian has made it clear that fans can expect to see their side playing on the front foot and scoring goals next campaign (Football.London).

Maddison likes what he sees from Postecoglou

Maddison has only been part of a few training sessions since reporting for pre-season last Wednesday but the 26-year-old has already been left impressed by Postecoglou and his coaching staff.

The attacking midfielder told Spurs Play: “The way the gaffer talks and the way he wants us to play is very clear and that shows in what he wants from the training sessions.

“Chris Davies, his assistant coach, I know very well from my time at Leicester, we worked together for nearly five years.”

“And getting to know the other coaches as well. No one’s stood on the sides. They are all involved, all taking part in the sessions and it has been high intensity and good quality. All we can ask for really.”

Maddison is now getting to know his new teammates, with nearly a full squad of players travelling on the pre-season tour to Australia, and the former Leicester man has admitted that he is enjoying his time Down Under.

Following the first full training sessions at Perth’s WACA, he said: “It was good. We’ve got a full squad back together now. Sonny and Skippy have joined up. So, everyone’s in the building. It has been good fun.

“We got a welcoming ceremony here, which was a traditional thing in Australia, which was very new to me. So, the first training in the bank and the lads are all happy.”

While it is normal for players to be excited during the start of a new era, it is noticeable that many have repeatedly mentioned how enjoyable training is, which certainly was not something we heard often during the Mourinho and Conte eras at Tottenham.
