Theo Walcott says 22-year-old Brighton player could shine at Tottenham

Theo Walcott has said that he can see Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour doing well at Tottenham Hotspur.

Gilmour was thought of as a potential future superstar while coming through the ranks of the Chelsea academy but the midfielder never quite managed to become a first-team regular at his boyhood club.

After the youngster impressed on loan at Norwich City in the 2021-22 season, Brighton decided to pay £9m to secure him from Stamford Bridge 18 months ago.

The 22-year-old struggled to establish himself as a regular in the Seagull’s starting eleven last season but that has now changed, with the youngster becoming a fixture in Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield over the last few months.

Would Billy Gilmour be a hit at Tottenham?

Walcott has suggested that Gilmour is capable of making a step up to a club just outside of the Champions League places.

The former Arsenal man opined that the Scotland international could fit in well in Ange Postecoglou’s side.

He told BBC build up about Gilmour: “I could see him playing for Tottenham, I could see him playing for that sort of club. To be fair that’s why I say Tottenham are just outside the top four.

“But, it’s a lot of pressure on that man’s shoulders, I’m not quite sure, we just need to be patient, but I would say just outside of the top four and that’s the reason I said Tottenham.”

While Tottenham do need reinforcements in the middle of the park and Gilmour would be a good fit for Postecoglou’s system, Brighton are certainly not going to let him leave on the cheap, with the midfielder contracted at the Amex Stadium until 2026.
