‘There was no proposal’ – Club president denies Tottenham’s rumoured bid for midfielder

Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim has denied reports suggesting that the Brazilian club had turned down an offer from Spurs for Gerson.

The midfielder has been the stand out player for Flamengo this season as they marched to another title victory under Jorge Jesus.

Tottenham were said to have made a bid of around £16million for the 23-year-old on the back of his impressive displays this season but it was claimed that the Brazilian giants rebuffed he approach from the Champions League finalists (Goal.com).

It was reported earlier this week that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund were also interested in the midfielder, who was set to be valued at around £31million (Fox Sports Brazil ).

Landim, however, has denied that the club have received any offers for the former Roma player.

He told to Sportv (as relayed by Fox Sports): “I don’t know if it reached Bruno Spindel or Marcos Braz, but there was no proposal for Gerson.

“They usually respond to me, you can be sure.”

Meanwhile, Esporte Interativo (as translated by Sport Witness) also suggests that the Flamengo board have dismissed claims that received a bid for the Brazilian Under-21 international.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is highly unlikely that Flamengo would be demanding anything close to £31million under the current financial climate. One would presume that they would be happy to take £15- £20m for the midfielder.

However, Gerson will represent a bigger risk than someone like Hojbjerg who is proven in the Premier League. I do not expect Spurs to take on more risk than needed in the transfer market this summer given the uncertainty surrounding our finances.
