Paul Merson admits that he is worried for Spurs

Arsenal Legend Paul Merson has admitted that, if he was a Spurs fan, he would be worried about the current situation.

The team have had a shaky start to the season which has led to calls from some fans for Mauricio Pochettino to leave.

Tottenham Hotspur have won just three games out of nine so far this season, losing three, and also drawing three. While this doesn’t sound like an absolute disaster on paper, the losses included a League Cup defeat to League Two Colchester and Newcastle at home in the Premier League.

Spurs also threw away 2-0 leads to draw games against Arsenal and Olympiacos.

Merson thinks that this bad start has been caused by problems off the pitch rather than ones on it.

He told SkySportsNews (28/09/19): “There’s something going on there that we don’t know. There’s definitely something going on.

“It seems like there’s a divide. I don’t know what it is, but at the moment, I worry for Tottenham.”

Despite this unrest, Tottenham were able to win a tough game against Southampton on Saturday despite Serge Aurier being dismissed early on. Spurs fans will have to hope that this is a sign that the team are finding their groove again.

Merson is probably right that there is something going on behind the scenes that the fans aren’t aware of. Pochettino’s teams have been characterised by great team spirit and togetherness, but this appears to be missing this season.

However, Pochettino deserves the fans support during this rough patch, I have confidence that the good atmosphere will return soon.
