‘They are convinced’ – Fabrizio Romano offers update on Djed Spence’s future

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham have not made a decision on whether to loan out Djed Spence yet, and that Antonio Conte will meet with the club hierarchy over the coming days to discuss the matter.

Spence has made just four appearances as a substitute since making the move from Middlesbrough to Spurs in the summer transfer window.

The Times reported last month the North London club might loan out the England Under-21 international in January in order to get him some regular game time in the second half of the season.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed last week that the right-back is expected to get opportunities during the behind-closed-door friendlies that Spurs will play leading up to the resumption of the Premier League season.

Romano has now explained that despite Spence’s lack of game time, Tottenham are very much convinced that the youngster can become a key player for the club in the future.

The journalist told Caught Offside: “There’s already speculation about Djed Spence’s future after a difficult start at Tottenham.

“My understanding is that Spence is not playing because Antonio Conte wants experienced players and Spence is considered a talent for the future. Tottenham were always the frontrunners in the summer and they are convinced he’s going to be a great investment for the future of the club.

“In terms of a January loan, no decision has been made yet; we will see what happens when Conte meets the board and decides the next steps.”

If Spurs were to sign a right wing-back in January (and sell Emerson Royal), Spence might continue to be third in the pecking order for the role. So, it will likely be in the interest of all parties to loan the 22-year-old to a Premier League club during the second half of the campaign so that he can prove himself at the top level.
