‘They will definitely consider it’ – David Ornstein can’t rule out dramatic late Tottenham bid

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has become the latest journalist to suggest that a potential move to Tottenham is still on the cards for Conor Gallagher late in the transfer window.

With just days left until the transfer window slams shut, there is no sign at the moment that Gallagher is on course to make a controversial move across London.

In fact, Football Insider claimed last week that the Lilywhites have admitted defeat in their pursuit of the England international and are now likely to keep hold of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg until the end of the season before revisiting a deal for the 23-year-old next summer.

However, this claim was contradicted by The Mirror’s Darren Lewis, who said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast a couple of days ago that a late departure for Gallagher cannot be ruled out, given Chelsea’s financial situation.

Potential late Conor Gallagher drama for Spurs

Ornstein has now backed up Lewis’ claim, insisting that the Blues would be tempted to accept any sizable late offer for their academy graduate, given his contract situation.

When asked if Tottenham’s pursuit of Gallagher is alive, he told Sky Sports News: “I wouldn’t rule out that we could see something develop with Conor Gallagher.

“Just because of his contract situation. We know that if suitable offers arrive then they will definitely consider it. That suitable offer would be a fee higher than Dragusin again.

“Tottenham definitely like him, and if they were to shift somebody like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, that frees up some funds on top of whatever existing funds they have to be able to go for somebody like Conor Gallagher.

“It could yet provide us with a major story. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen but… that’s plausible.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am absolutely certain that Daniel Levy will test Chelsea’s resolve with an offer or two for Gallagher but at this stage, it seems unlikely that those bids might not be enough to persuade the Blues to sell the midfielder.

The fact that Postecoglou started Hojbjerg over Skipp against Manchester City is perhaps another big hint that the Dane is staying put, which makes a move for Gallagher even less likely.
