‘They’re finished’ – Jamie O’Hara sounds warning to Daniel Levy ahead of January window

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara has warned that should Spurs lose any one of James Maddison, Heung-min Son or Cristian Romero to injury, it would put an end to any early hopes of competing for the Premier League title.

Tottenham headed into the international break at the top of the table having gone unbeaten in their opening eight fixtures with six wins and two draws to the name in what has been an impressive start under new head coach Ange Postecoglou.

The North Londoners have the opportunity later this evening to reclaim top spot from Manchester City when they host Fulham in N17, where a victory will take them two points clear of the current Premier League champions.

After a difficult previous campaign in which Heung-min Son struggled to find the back of the net and had to deal with injury issues, Romero was also not at his best and did not play at his consistent best week in, week out.

The pair have looked back to their best under the Australian in the early part of the new campaign, while summer arrival James Maddison is already putting his hand up to be one of the signings of the season having taken to life at Spurs like a duck to water.

Spurs must make more signings in January

O’Hara has called for chairman Daniel Levy to back Postecoglou in the January transfer window if they are still in the mix with the title contenders at that stage of the season.

He told Grosvenor Sport: “I think Tottenham’s situation as a squad has definitely got better this season and they have players that can come on and make a difference, but I still think they need to improve in January.

“If Spurs can stay in touch with Manchester City and Arsenal until January, Daniel Levy may look at the situation and realise that they actually have half a chance of challenging for the title. That could make him go out and spend some money on solid reinforcements. Then I think Spurs would have a chance of winning the league.

“They have a similar situation to Arsenal last season in that if they lose a couple of key players to injury they’ll be in a lot of trouble. If they lose James Maddison to injury, they’re finished. Similarly, if they lose Heung-min Son or Cristian Romero, they’re finished. The good thing for Spurs is that they don’t have any European football so there is a good chance that everyone will stay fit.”

O’Hara is right to highlight the lack of quality in the squad depth at Tottenham and they certainly are a couple of players away from having a problem on their hands if injuries mount up.

Central defensive cover for Cristian Romero has to be a priority in the upcoming window, along with another forward considering Richarlison continues to struggle to put the ball in the back of the net.
