Michael Dawson has described his recall to the England squad as ‘a crazy day’.

The Tottenham defender was called and told to pack his bags within an hour and head to the airport for a flight to South Africa, following Rio Ferdinand’s knee injury in training ruled him out of the tournament.

“Things can change in a split second,” Dawson told the club’s website.

“One minute I’m trying to arrange my holiday, then I get a call asking if I was on holiday because Rio had pulled out of training.

“I said ‘no’ and then I was just waiting by the phone before getting a call saying I would be picked up in an hour. It’s been a crazy day.”

“I know all the lads through having been with them for two weeks so I’ll just be going out there and training as normal,” said Dawson.

“I’ll be going out there still having not yet won a senior cap so where better place to get one?”

“For Rio to get injured there would be no worse feeling for him as a player,” Dawson added. “To miss the biggest tournament in the world as the captain, I feel for him.

“I missed the League Cup final (win over Chelsea) in 2008 and there was nothing anyone could have said to me that could have made me feel any better.”

  1. This is great for Daws and sad for Reo but this is the results of players not being fit there are a few more players with injury's and ignoring them to get on the plane . The worse one is Barry he should heve bean left at home Poor Tom Hudds aged 23 and fit left at home and i will bet any money Barry will break down . This could but Tom back in his progress if he dwells on this stupid decision both he and Wallcott should have gone to progress. Barry had a average season and was on the losing side twice against Toms Midfield Lets all pray he wakes up with severe swelling of his Ankle and Tom gets a call to replace him.
