Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that he never had any doubts about his future at Paris Saint-Germain amidst rumours of a potential return to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Tottenham were linked with a whole host of managerial candidates in the summer, including Pochettino, before eventually appointing Nuno Espirito Santo as Jose Mourinho’s replacement.
Some sources indicated at the time that the former Spurs boss was keen on a return to North London, with the 49-year-old alleged to be unhappy at PSG.
However, the move did not materialise, and it was suggested at the time that Pochettino’s unwillingness to go public about his desire to leave PSG was the main reason behind why the move fell through.
The former Tottenham manager signed a new contract with the Parisians last month, thus putting an end to any speculation that he could leave the Parc des Princes.
The PSG boss has now insisted that he had no reason to comment on the rumours about his future as his relationship with the French club’s hierarchy remained positive.
When asked about the speculation linking him with a return to Spurs, Pochettino told Le Parisien (as relayed by Football London): “There were a lot of rumours.
MORE SPURS STORIES
“We all know what the reality of football is. There are moves between clubs, involving players and managers, so the rumours are always there.
“I’ve always maintained a calm, fluid relationship with the president and with [PSG sporting director] Leonardo.
“Things were always clear, there was no reason to say anything more.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is clear to me that Pochettino used Tottenham’s rumoured interest to secure a better contract at PSG. He could have quite easily come out and squashed the rumours when they emerged but he seemed perfectly happy for the speculation to continue.
