“This I think is embarrassing” – Alan Shearer comments on Spurs v Watford match

Former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has had his say on an incident during Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League match against Watford.

The Hornets broke the deadlock after just nine minutes of action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when a cross-field ball caught Danny Rose well out of position and let Janmaat in down the right and his laser-like cross was buried by Doucoure from 12 yards out.

Watford can feel aggreived that they were not able to double their lead when Jan Vertonghen brought down Gerard Deulofeu only for referee Chris Kavanagh to wave away the protests and a spot-kick was also ruled out by VAR.

Shearer was left baffled by the decision not to award Quique Sanchez Flores’ side a penalty and claimed that VAR is not being operated as it should be.

Shearer said during Match of the Day on BBC from 10:35pm on 19/10/19:”This I think is embarrassing.

“He takes two or three swipes at Deulofeu. That should be a definite penalty. After nine weeks in the Premier League we all want VAR to work but it’s not being used correctly.

Opinion

With Spurs struggling creatively, if Watford had scored a second it could have proven to be catastrophic for the home side.

Thankfully the decision was not awarded and Spurs escaped with a late point.
