Alex McLeish has tipped Tottenham to make a push for the top four if they can secure up to two ‘special players’ in January.
Spurs are currently sitting in sixth in the Premier Leagued have closed the gap on West Ham who occupy the final Champions League place, having won the last three games on the bounce.
However, Antonio Conte’s side also face the prospect of having two games in hand over the sides around them, with cancellations to their encounters against Burnley and Brighton called off due to adverse weather conditions and Covid-19 respectively.
Despite a positive start to life under the former Inter Milan boss, Conte is said to be planning a refresh to his side in January with defensive reinforcements tipped to be a priority as he continues to moult the side as his own.
As such, McLeish feels a spending spree from Tottenham in January could give the side a big lift in terms of their push for the top four.
He told Football Insider: “If they get one or two special players, they could push for the top four. If you go on a long unbeaten run, that’s a probability. But I do believe that the top four will be just too much for them.
“But if the recruitment is different to how it has been in the past few years, they do have a chance. Two or three players can make a hell of a difference.
“In the past, Mourinho said the academy was really good and he was going to promote players. But that gave me the feeling that he wasn’t going to have any money to spend.
“Spurs haven’t spent big money for a long time and perhaps this is their moment.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Spurs don’t usually spend a huge amount in January, but with Conte here he will have likely picked out some areas that the club needs to improve as soon as possible. As long as the Italian’s demands aren’t overly excessive, there aren’t many reasons why Spurs shouldn’t listen to him.
