Matt Doherty has taken to social media to admit his disappointment after the Republic of Ireland suffered penalty shootout heartbreak in their Euro qualifier play-off against Slovenia on Thursday.
The two sides could not be separated in ninety minutes or extra time but Slovenia held their nerve from the spot to convert all four penalties, while Ireland missed two.
Doherty saw his own effort come off the post, which sealed the fate of Stephen Kenny’s side and allowed Slovenia to book a place in next summer’s Euros.
The result is a particularly hard one for the Irish to swallow since they had chances to win the game in normal time and extra time.
Doherty came in for plenty of criticism on social media for not just his penalty but also his performance in the game.
The right-back has now claimed that Ireland deserved better for their performance and admitted that the defeat was hard to take.
Very tough way to lose out on our dream we deserved so much more than this during the 120 mins. This one hurts. pic.twitter.com/tIO8KhZOKO
