‘This will never happen’ – Some Spurs fans laugh off links with World Cup winner

According to a report in Spanish publication El Desmarque (as translated by Daily Mail), Tottenham are preparing an audacious move to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane in the January transfer window.

Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho singed Varane as a teenager for Madrid and the French international has since then gone on to establish himself as one of the best central defenders in world football.

The report claims that the 26-year-old is looking for a new challenge after making over 300 appearances for Los Blancos and winning 16 major trophies with the club.

It is suggested that Tottenham hope to land Varane for £68million in January with Mourinho hopeful he can convince the defender to make the switch to North London.

Some Spurs fans on social media rubbished the rumour and insisted that there was absolutely zero chance of Daniel Levy paying the kind of money it would take to sign Varane.

The only possible basis for this rumour seems to be Mourinho’s good relationship with Varane. There is no indication that the French international will leave Madrid or that the Spanish giants would even sanction a deal for anything short of a world record bid for a defender. So, it’s safe to say we can write this one out.
