Thomas Frank makes interesting admission about Archie Gray after rare Tottenham start

Thomas Frank has revealed what he thought of Archie Gray’s performance at left-back for Tottenham against Monaco and has spoken about his best position.

Gray impressed in his debut season at Tottenham following his move from the Championship in 2024, making 46 appearances for the Lilywhites across all competitions last season.

The youngster had to fill in a lot at centre-back due to the club’s injury problems at the back last term.

While he has found game time hard to come by so far this campaign, the minutes he has gotten before yesterday primarily came in midfield, which Frank has previously said is Gray’s best position.

Thomas Frank makes a surprising claim about Tottenham youngster Archie Gray

The 19-year-old did make some unforced errors in possession against Monaco, misplacing passes a number of times.

Some would have seen that as the teenager struggling to adapt to being played out of position, but Frank insists that he was pleased with what he saw from the former Leeds man at Stade Louis II.

However, the Tottenham boss reiterated that he still thinks the youngster is better suited to playing in the middle of the park.

When asked what he thought about Gray’s performance and what the 19-year-old can give the side as a left-back, Frank said (via the club’s official website): “I think he did it very well, as he’s done a lot of times last year, left-back, right-back and centre-back.

“I think he can play all three positions, I think his best position is still midfielder, but I think he can play all three. I like his character and effort in the left-back position and then he just carried on when he came into the midfield and did well there as well.”

Frank thinks Gray can be one of the best number sixes in the world

While we may not have seen as much of the teenager this season as we did last term, the Spurs boss has no doubts about his potential.

Earlier this month, Frank said that Gray has the ability to become as good as Declan Rice and Rodri in the future.

Given the consternation among Spurs fans about the Rodrigo Bentancur-Joao Palhinha pairing in midfield, they would be hoping that the Dane gives Gray a run in the side.
