Thomas Frank references Harry Kane when taking about David Raya transfer

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has pointed to the transfer fees being reported for Harry Kane as evidence as to why David Raya is worth £40m in the current market.

It was widely reported at the start of the summer that Raya was Tottenham’s top target to replace Hugo Lloris and that the North London club had even agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old (The Times).

However, it emerged midway into June that Spurs were set to turn their attention to other alternatives, including Vicario, as Brentford were unwilling to drop their asking price of £40m for their number one, even though he had just a year left on his contract (90 min).

Spurs then quickly managed to wrap up a deal worth £16.4m for the Italian goalkeeper, but it has now emerged that Raya is a target for their North London rivals, Arsenal, who are expected to launch an offer of £15m for the Spaniard (Daily Mail).

Brentford still want £40m for David Raya

However, Frank has now reiterated that the goalkeeper is worth £40m despite his contract situation.

When asked about Raya, the Brentford boss said (via Keith Dowie): “He’s worth £40m. He was one of the four best keepers in the PL last season.

“What is the fair price for a player with one year left? Declan Rice went to Arsenal for £105m? And Harry Kane, they’re talking about £150m?”

From the manner in which Brentford are playing hardball with Raya, it seems like Tottenham certainly made the right decision to turn their attention to Vicario rather than waiting for the West London club to soften their stance.
