Three Tottenham players named in Alan Shearer’s PL Team of the Week

Eric Dier, Emerson Royal and Oliver Skipp have all been named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week.

Following Tottenham’s 4-1 drubbing at Leicester City a couple of weeks ago, a game in which the Lilywhites’ defensive woes were clear for all to see, it seemed as though the club’s decision not to strengthen at centre-back in January was set to cost them a place in next season’s Champions League.

However, since the game at the King Power Stadium, Antonio Conte’s men have really tightened up at the back, having conceded just one goal in three matches.

Even more impressively, Spurs have won all of their last three Premier League games at home against Manchester City, West Ham United and Chelsea while keeping clean sheets and hardly giving away any clear-cut chances to the opposition.

Dier, who came under plenty of criticism after the loss against the Foxes, has hardly put a foot wrong in the heart of the defence since that game while Emerson has had a new lease of life since Pedro Porro’s arrival.

Skipp has filled the void left by Rodrigo Bentancur’s absence in the middle of the park, mopping up impressively in front of the back four.

The Spurs academy graduate also netted his first senior goal for Tottenham in the London derby win on Sunday, which unsurprisingly earned him a place in Shearer’s Team of the Week alongside Dier and Emerson.

While Dier was flawless against Chelsea, I am surprised that the 29-year-old has made Shearer’s team ahead of Cristian Romero, who I thought was our best player on Sunday.

The way the Argentine nullified Chelsea’s threat, most of which was coming from their left through Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell and Joao Felix, was extremely impressive.
