‘Tick a lot of boxes’ – Journalist hands Spurs major boost in race for 24-year-old

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey has said that Conor Gallagher is not too keen on joining Newcastle United, suggesting that Tottenham are now in pole position to land the midfielder.

Gallagher currently has one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and does not appear close to agreeing on a new deal. It has also been claimed by multiple outlets that Chelsea do not have any choice but to put the midfielder up for sale due to their PSR issues (The Times).

Last week, Football Insider became the latest publication to name Tottenham as the favourites to land the 24-year-old, explaining that the Lilywhites are ‘well placed’ to beat Newcastle to the player, given the financial situation of both those clubs.

The report added that the England international is now open to the idea of leaving his boyhood club this summer, with no progress being made in talks over a new deal with Chelsea.

Conor Gallagher would prefer to stay in London

Bailey has now said that Gallagher is not so keen on moving to the North East, naming Spurs and West Ham as the two most likely destinations for the player.

However, he insisted that Ange Postecoglou’s men have also identified other alternatives in case their pursuit of the Blues star fails.

When asked about Gallgher’s future, the journalist told The Spurs News: “I understand that he’s not that keen to move to Newcastle, from what I’m being told. Obviously, West Ham would fancy their chances, but if he has to move you would think that Tottenham would tick a lot of boxes. Obviously, there are not many places he could move.

“I think he’d be a thoroughly welcome addition to Spurs. And Spurs, from my understanding, like him a lot. They are not banking on him because they’re aware of this contract situation.

“It wouldn’t surprise Tottenham if next week Chelsea offered him a contract and he signs it very quickly. So, he is on the radar, but they’re not putting all their eggs in that basket.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If the decision was up to Gallagher, I am sure he will favour a move to Tottenham. However, the issue is that Chelsea might not be overly keen on selling a player who is a popular figure among their fans to the club’s fiercest rivals, which is why Spurs should be making contingency plans.
