Tim Sherwood is sceptical about Ange Postecoglou’s recent statement

Tim Sherwood has said that the problems at Tottenham might not go away simply by buying players who Ange Postecoglou feels are better suited to his system.

Postecoglou has made it clear throughout his managerial journey that he is not going to change his principles and so unsurprisingly, despite Tottenham’s recent struggles, the 58-year-old has continued to double down on his ultra-aggressive approach.

The Spurs head coach said last week to Football.London on the back of his side’s loss to Chelsea that nothing he has seen over the last few months has made him doubt that his philosophy can bring success to Spurs.

However, for the first time since taking over at Tottenham, Postecoglou also admitted that there has to be a substantial change in personnel this summer, with the Lilywhites needing players who are better suited to playing the way he wants to.

Tim Sherwood thinks Postecoglou needs to change tactics

Sherwood pointed out that no matter who Tottenham sign, the problem of leaving your defenders exposed will not change if Spurs do not tweak their system.

When asked about Postecoglou’s comments about wanting to bring players in to suit his approach, the former interim Tottenham boss told Premier League Productions (06/05/24 at 2:35 pm): “I don’t think those players exist to play that way all of the time.”

While Sherwood’s point is a fair one, I do think that the defence will be less exposed if we have better personnel in the middle of the park.

The reason Ange is keen on landing workhorses like Gallagher is that if we improve our counter-pressing and win the ball back as soon as we lose it, our defenders would be less exposed to counter-attacks.
