Tim Sherwood makes Arsenal claim about Spurs Europa League ambitions

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are the second-favourites to win the Europa League title after Manchester United this season.

Tottenham eased into the Round of 16 with a commanding win over Wolfsberger on Wednesday, beating the Austrian side 4-0 in the second leg and 8-1 on aggregate.

The competition arguably represents Spurs’ best chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League since Jose Mourinho’s men are far adrift of the top four places in the Premier League.

Tottenham await the draw for the round of 16 on Friday and unlike the previous round, teams from the same domestic league will not be kept apart in the next stage (Express).

This means that Spurs could draw anyone of Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester, all of whom are in action this evening.

Sherwood believes that the three English teams are the ones the North Londoners should be looking to avoid in the next round.

Speaking after Tottenham’s win over Wolfsberger, the former Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports’ Soccer Special on Wednesday night (24/02/21 at 7:00 pm): “They (Tottenham) are second-favourites to win it.

“Manchester United will be favourites. I think it’s all in the draw now.

“You want to try and avoid Manchester United. You want to avoid Arsenal. You want to avoid Leicester.

“I think the English teams are the real force in this competition.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do agree with Sherwood’s assessment that the English teams seem like the ones to beat in the competition. One advantage that Spurs and Arsenal have over Leicester and Manchester United is that they can afford to concentrate more on the Europa League since a top-four finish now looks unlikely for either North London club.
