Timo Werner admits he already has a ‘good connection’ with one Spurs star

Timo Werner has said that despite only being at Tottenham for a little over a week, he is already starting to develop a great connection with Destiny Udogie.

Werner was thrown straight into the starting lineup by Ange Postecoglou against Manchester United last Sunday, with the Australian perhaps not having much of a choice due to the unavailability of Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Giovani Lo Celso.

While the German international did look rusty on occasions, which was to be expected given his lack of game time this season, he did produce some bright moments, including setting up Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser at the start of the second period.

Timo Werner already loves playing with Udogie

Werner combined quite well with Udogie down Tottenham’s left, with the pair seeming to have a decent understanding of when each other goes infield and when they overlap.

The 27-year-old has now said that while he is still learning about the left-back’s strengths in the final third, he admitted that he already intuitively understands the positions that the Italian takes up on the pitch.

When asked about his combination play with Udogie, Werner told Spurs Play: “Very good, this one works very good in training already. I think straight away we had a good connection.

“How he goes into midfield and how I stay wide, I think that fits very well. I think both of us feel very comfortable with these positions and also after two to three training sessions, I really don’t know his movements in the last third.

“But I think now we have two weeks until the next game, it can only be better and I think it is already good how we play together.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It might take Werner a few more weeks to get up to pace but if Postecoglou can get the German playing at his best (which is a big ‘if), he will undoubtedly be a nightmare to play against and will make opposition teams think twice about squeezing Tottenham up the pitch.
