Timo Werner reveals what he told Postecoglou before he signed for Spurs

On the back of his heroics against Brentford, Timo Werner has revealed that he spoke with Ange Postecoglou ahead of his switch to Tottenham about how much he loves creating chances for others.

Werner’s arrival at Spurs garnered mixed reactions from Spurs fans as well as from pundits, with some sceptical of the signing due to his previous struggles at Chelsea.

However, just three games into his Tottenham career, it is already quite clear that the German international is a very good fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system, given his directness and pace.

The 27-year-old was a handful for the Bees defence throughout the 90 minutes yesterday, taking his man on at every opportunity and looking to get the ball into the box.

Not only did he set up Brennan Johnson’s goal with an inch-perfect-low cross into the box but he was also heavily involved in the build-up to Desinty Udogie’s equaliser.

Timo Werner told Postecoglou about his intention to create

Following Tottenham’s 3-2 win, Werner admitted that he enjoys setting up chances for his teammates just as much as he does scoring.

When asked about the many opportunities he created on Wednesday, the forward told Spurs Play: “That’s exactly what I talked about with the manager when he called me. I learned over my time in the Premier League that not always goals are counting.

“Of course, goals for an offensive player are the best you can do. But at the end of the call, I told him I love to do assists as well. If we count it, that’s three assists and that’s exactly why I’m here. That’s exactly what he told me as well, that this football and myself fit together and we will enjoy it.”

The one thing that is quite evident with Werner is the fact that he puts the needs of the team above individual glory. He keeps making selfless runs to stretch defences while also working tirelessly out of possession to close down the opposition. Those are characteristics that Postecoglou values highly.
