‘To be honest’ – Alasdair Gold doubts if midfielder is a realistic target for Spurs

Alasdair Gold has expressed doubts as to whether Tottenham Hotspur would be able to prize Douglas Luiz away from Aston Villa this summer.

Last week, we relayed a report from The Daily Mail, which claimed that Spurs are eyeing Luiz as a potential replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is expected to complete a move to Atletico Madrid over the coming weeks.

The report added that it is unclear if Unai Emery would be willing to let go of the Brazilian, who was a fixture in his starting lineup last season.

The Sun subsequently claimed on July 20 that Tottenham could have competition to contend with from their North London rivals, Arsenal, for the Villa star’s signature.

It was revealed that the Gunners tried in vain to prize away Luiz from Villa Park last summer and could be about to try again to sign the 25-year-old this window.

Douglas Luiz may not be realistic for Tottenham

However, Gold fears that the Midlands club could demand an astronomical fee for the midfielder.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “If Hojbjerg goes we know they have interest in Conor Gallagher and I saw Douglas Luiz linked today. Gallagher is one who could grow for the future.

“Luiz, I don’t know if it’s too expensive, to be honest, in that I don’t know if Villa would let him go for anything in the realm of possibility.”

With Luiz having three years left on his contract, Villa are certainly not going to let him go on the cheap.

However, if Unai Emery is keen on reuniting with Giovani Lo Celso, Spurs could perhaps consider using the Argentine as part of the deal to sign the 25-year-old.
