Video: “To retire was so liberating” – Former Spurs star opens up about career

Rewind back to the summer of 2008, and David Bentley had the world at his feet.

The then 23-year-old wide man, who was expected to be the next best thing in English football, had just signed for Tottenham in a £15 million deal.

Comparisons with David Beckham were inevitable given Bentley’s playing style and good looks.

However, it all went downhill for the former England international from there as he ended up on loan in the Championship in three years time before being sent out to Russia to play for FC Rostov.

Bentley clearly wasn’t enjoying his football and finally called a day on his career in 2014, aged just 29.

In an interview to BBC Radio 5 live Sport, the former Spurs midfielder has opened up about his mental health issues while playing football and has insisted that he is much happier since he has retired.
