‘To win something’ – Timo Werner speaks for the first time as a Spurs player

Timo Werner is now officially a Tottenham Hotspur player, and the attacker has spoken to the press for the first time since confirming his move to North London to reveal how Ange Postecoglou persuaded him to join the club, how he can fit into the Spurs system, and how it feels to be back in the Premier League.

It was well-documented that Spurs were looking for a new wide player this month, but nobody expected them to turn to former Chelsea player Timo Werner to fill that position.

The 27-year-old joins Tottenham on a six-month loan deal, during which time the club will pay his salary. There is a purchase option included in the arrangement which is thought to allow Spurs the chance to make the move permanent for €17m (£14.6m), as per Fabrizio Romano.

It has already been stated that Ange Postecoglou personally wanted the transfer to happen (Philipp Hinze) and that Werner himself was excited to work with the Spurs boss (Fabrizio Romano).

Werner’s first interview as a Spurs player

Well, now that the deal is complete, Werner has been speaking to the press (via Football.London) for the first time as a new Spurs player, and he had plenty to say about Postecoglou and the reasons he chose this move.

On the phone call that influenced his decision, Werner said: “I talked with the manager and it was a really, really good talk. He gave me straight away the feeling of what I need to join a club, what I want to feel when you talk to a manager.

“Also the tactics and the style, how he wants to play, how he lets the team play, for me I thought straight away that it fits perfectly.”

On his role at the club, Werner added: “I hope I can be the best player I can be here. I can play every position up front. That’s always good when you can have players that can play in all kinds of positions.

“We can change also in the game and I think it makes it even harder for the other team to defend because they never know who is coming and what they’re position is now. I think that’s one of my strengths to be flexible up front and to play in every position.”

And finally, on his return to the Premier League, the new Spurs man said: “When I left the Premier League, you already feel straight away that you missed something because it’s the best league in the world.

“My aim to come back here is to fight for another win in this league and also for maybe titles… I’ve come here to also win titles to win something… I’m really looking forward to this experience to get started tomorrow and meet the guys and have fun with them.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I love these answers. You can tell Timo is hungry to prove himself here after what happened at Chelsea, and that he has totally bought into Postecoglou’s methods already, too. I have a very good feeling about this move.
